Audio effects and utilities

SpaceBlender is an experimental reverb from Soundtoys for creating unreal spaces, evolving textures, and cinematic swells with unique algorithmic controls.

SpaceBlender

Core Purpose

SpaceBlender is designed to create spatial effects that are impossible in the real world. It draws inspiration from ambient music pioneers who used layered tape loops and delays. The reverb can produce massive, lush, evolving soundscapes from simple sources, turning ordinary audio into dramatic cinematic swells.

It is an algorithmic reverb with an experimental character, merging classic digital reverb traits with new sound design possibilities. The developer team has decades of experience, including creating DSP algorithms for the Eventide DSP4000 BlackHole effect. SpaceBlender also takes cues from classic hardware like the Ursa Major Space Station, Lexicon 224, and Swarmatron synthesizer.

Key Controls

The Time knob sets reverb length from 100 milliseconds to one minute, and can sync to your track’s tempo for ambient loops or gated effects. The Color control toggles between darker lo-fi tones and brighter, evolving highs that increase over time—a feature not found in conventional reverbs.

The Texture control shapes the character from smooth, lush reverb to sparse, swarming repeats. Mod adjusts random movement within the processing layers, allowing for static or watery modulation. Engaging Freeze feeds output back into itself, creating organic, degrading ambient loops.

Interactive Workflow

The Visualizer displays the effect’s shape and interaction with your audio, which is especially helpful for long time settings and slow attacks. You can see and anticipate how the effect evolves over time. This visual feedback supports precise control during playback.

To manipulate the reverb envelope, drag the X/Y cursor across the screen, causing the effect to morph in real time. This intuitive method lets you dial in timing and shape without navigating complex menus. It is designed for hands-on, performance-oriented tweaking.

Practical Applications

While SpaceBlender excels at cinematic sound design and avant-garde experiments, it is also useful in everyday music production. You can add depth and dimension to vocals, guitars, synths, or any other audio source. Its extreme time range supports tight 100ms non-linear bursts or sprawling 60-second meditations.

Embedded modulation adds rich, evolving motion to ambient effects. The Texture control shifts smoothly from dense and lush to sparse and grainy, giving you flexibility for various tracks. Use it for ambient loops, frozen tails, gated effects, or to create organic soundscapes that evolve over time.

Key features

  • Morph between gate, reverse, decay, and bloom reverb shapes in real time
  • Visualizer lets you see the reverb shape and its interaction with sound
  • Spectral evolution to grow darker or brighter over time
  • Embedded modulation for rich, evolving motion
  • Texture control from dense and lush to sparse and grainy
  • Extreme range from 100ms to 60 seconds

Best for

SpaceBlender is best for sound designers and music producers seeking unique, evolving spatial effects. It suits creating ambient pads, cinematic swells, experimental textures, and adding dimension to everyday tracks. Its interactive morphing and long time range make it ideal for live performance and studio experimentation alike.
