Audio effects and utilities

Bus Clipper by Slate Digital is a precision digital clipper and waveshaper for mixing and mastering, offering manual control, smart oversampling, and true peak limiting to achieve loud, punchy masters.

Bus Clipper

Purpose and Design

Bus Clipper is engineered for critical mixing and mastering stages, targeting DIY engineers who want professional loudness without sacrificing transient punch. It operates sample-by-sample: peaks above a ceiling are reduced, while all other audio passes through untouched, with no attack, release, or lookahead controls.

The Clipper stage offers three customizable clipping modes via a Shape/Harmonics knob, ranging from hard clipping to gentle saturation and harmonic generation. This design provides manual control over the clipping character, allowing precise shaping of transients and harmonics.

Key Capabilities: Clipper and Booster

The Booster stage uses waveshaping to increase perceived loudness without raising peak levels, lifting quieter parts while louder parts remain unchanged. This adds presence and loudness without intermodulation artifacts typical of time-based limiting. Three booster modes—Mellow, Standard, and Aggressive—are available with a Gain knob.

A real-time transfer function display shows the exact curve applied, ensuring visual feedback. The combination of clipping and boosting enables effective use of headroom, making the master sound louder and more present.

Workflow and Oversampling

Bus Clipper’s alias-reduction algorithm generates fewer supersonic harmonics, so 16x oversampling achieves quality that other clippers need 256x to reach, reducing CPU load and latency. Users select oversampling rates (2x, 4x, 8x, 16x) and choose linear-phase or minimum-phase downsampling filtering.

A true peak limiter at the end catches any remaining overshoots. Built for mastering chains, it also works on drum buses, snare tracks, or any signal needing transient control. It pairs well with Infinity EQ 2 for tonal work, FG-X 2 for final limiting, and Virtual Tape Machines for analog character.

Metering and Practical Applications

Comprehensive metering includes Integrated Loudness (LUFS-I), Short-Term Loudness (LUFS-S), and True Peak levels, monitored in real-time. A gain reduction style meter allows familiar monitoring similar to a compressor or limiter. Delta Listen lets you hear exactly what is being removed, and Constant Gain Monitoring (CGM) enables A/B testing without volume jumps.

Typical applications include mastering to achieve maximum loudness, drum bus processing to control transients, and snare tracks to push level and punch. It fits any chain where headroom utilization and transient shaping are needed.

Key features

  • Stage 1 Clipper chops off transient spikes to reclaim headroom
  • Stage 2 Booster uses waveshaping to increase perceived loudness without raising peaks
  • Three clipping modes with Shape/Harmonics knob for hard to gentle clipping
  • Three booster modes with Gain knob and transfer function display
  • Smart oversampling up to 16x with alias reduction for low CPU load
  • Linear-phase or minimum-phase downsampling filtering options
  • True peak limiter at end catches overshoots
  • Real-time metering: LUFS-I, LUFS-S, True Peak, and gain reduction meter

Best for

Bus Clipper is ideal for mastering engineers and mixers seeking to achieve modern loudness without transient damage. It excels on drum buses, snare tracks, and full masters, offering manual control and CPU-efficient oversampling. Pair it with other Slate Digital tools for a complete chain, or use standalone for precise headroom utilization.
