Purpose and Core Function

liftFX is a synthesis-based virtual instrument designed to create risers, downlifters, drops, swells, and other transitional effects without relying on samples. It is built for generating these sounds directly within a DAW. The plug-in is intended to simplify the process of adding hype and energy to a track.

The instrument operates as a generator, meaning it produces sound from scratch rather than playing back audio files. It is playable in real-time, either by striking a key to trigger an automatic effect development or by using the modwheel for live control. This approach is tailored for beat drops and transitions.

Key Capabilities and Control

liftFX provides four automatable macros that independently control the complex synthesis processes. Each macro can be automated and supports modwheel (CC1) control. A time lock feature lets you audition different presets while keeping a consistent duration. A control lock enables switching presets while retaining your current macro settings.

The interface offers immediate visual feedback, giving you an understanding of the sound’s behavior. The instrument can sync to your DAW’s tempo or run on a time-based duration. Any pitch, duration, and tempo are possible, and the user can set the root note and range.

Presets and Sound Design

liftFX ships with a package of 275 presets covering risers and downlifters, both tonal and noise-based, plus bass drops, rhythmic and percussive builds, and bonus effects. These range from basic to complex designs. Users can also create custom sounds by manipulating the macros and filters.

The included effects include high cut and low cut filters, reverb, and delay, which can be combined with the synthesis engine. This makes liftFX suitable for cinematic and experimental sound design, as well as for adding tonal layers or harmonic overtones to beef up synthesizers. The plug-in is lightweight because it relies on synthesis rather than sample playback.

Workflow and Applications

In a typical workflow, you load liftFX on a track, select a preset, and trigger it via MIDI. The effect can be set to sync with the project tempo, ensuring it matches the beat. You can adjust the duration or pitch to fit the track. Automation of the four macros allows for dynamic evolution.

For live performance, the modwheel gives real-time control over the effect’s development. You can also use the auto-function to let the effect unfold automatically. This is useful for electronic genres like EDM, trap, dubstep, pop, hip hop, drum and bass, house, and techno, as well as for cinematic scoring.
