SSL 4K E is a detailed software emulation of the classic 4000E console channel strip, featuring transformer-based mic preamp, multiple EQ revisions, compressor, gate/expander, and VCA fader saturation.
Authentic Circuit Emulation
SSL 4K E captures the sound of the legendary 4000E console through component-level modeling. The plugin includes a transformer-balanced mic preamp based on the Jensen JT-115K-E, which adds even-order harmonics when driven. This contrasts with earlier B-series models by offering a different saturation character.
The channel strip also models the DBX 202 ‘gold can’ VCA fader, introducing subtle harmonic saturation at the output stage. Drive the fader to add warmth, then use the output trim to balance levels. These elements combine to reproduce the console’s rich, non-linear analogue behavior.
Flexible EQ and Dynamics
The plugin includes three EQ knob variants, each with a distinct tonal personality. The original ‘Brown’ knob is known for its grit, the ‘Orange’ knob offers a rarer passive curve, and the ‘Black’ knob delivers cleaner response with powerful low-end weight. This lets you match the EQ character to the source material.
The dynamics section features a soft-knee compressor with FAST/SLOW attack options and a logarithmic release curve, ideal for smoothing signals. The gate/expander is effective for cleaning up audio at the source or for creative rhythmic effects during mixing.
Workflow and Control
SSL 4K E integrates with the SSL 360° Plug-in Mixer, allowing you to mix and match multiple SSL channel strip plugins within a virtual console environment. This provides a unified control surface for managing sessions efficiently.
For hands-on operation, the plugin supports the SSL UF8 and UC1 hardware controllers, giving tactile access to EQ, dynamics, and fader parameters. This bridges the gap between software convenience and analogue-style workflow, speeding up mix decisions.
Practical Applications
Use the mic preamp drive on vocals or drums to add harmonic richness, or employ the EQ to sculpt tones with precision. The compressor is versatile for vocals, bass, and acoustic instruments, while the gate/expander can tighten noisy tracks or create gated effects.
The plugin excels in mixing contexts, from rock and pop to R&B, providing a cohesive, punchy character. It is well-suited for producers and engineers seeking to infuse their mixes with the classic 4000E vibe, whether on individual tracks or across a full mix bus.
