LoFi Tapestop replicates analog tape start-up and stop pitch effects, offering detailed control over timing, warble, noise, and tone. It syncs to your session for creative, retriggerable slowdowns and speed-ups.

Purpose
LoFi Tapestop is an audio effect that emulates the pitch behavior and instabilities of an analog tape player when it starts up or stops. It recreates the classic Tapestop, the pitch-down effect heard in clubs and productions, and the Tapestart, the pitch-up effect when playback begins. The plugin focuses on realism and control, letting you replicate these effects with varying degrees of accuracy.
It provides Start and Stop buttons that simulate a virtual tape machine. The Start button triggers a pitch-up effect, while the Stop button triggers a pitch-down slowdown. Both are fully retriggerable at any time, so you can repeat the effect without waiting for the previous one to finish.
Key Capabilities
The Time Knob sets the duration of each start-up or slow-down, ranging up to 9,999 milliseconds (nearly 10 seconds). A Time Switch lets you choose between free-running milliseconds or a synced beat mode that aligns to your session’s BPM. This allows precise timing or rhythmic sync.
Flux control adds fluctuating pitch warble and modeled imperfections. At 0%, the effect is pristine and accurate; at 100%, it’s full of character. Dust adds warm noise and fuzz that increases as the pitch lowers. Muffle reduces brightness as the pitch lowers, shaping the tonal evolution of the effect.
Workflow
The Shape switch selects between linear and curved behaviors for the start and stop, both modeled from real-world devices. This gives you creative control over the acceleration or deceleration curve of the pitch change. The visual display provides a clear representation of the current tape behavior, helping you monitor and tweak settings.
You can trigger start and stop via automation at any time, allowing for seamless integration into your session. Sync to session BPM enables retriggering as much as you like, making it easy to create rhythmic tape-stop effects on drums, vocals, or synths. The plugin is designed to be a go-to tool for adding realistic tape character.
Practical Applications
LoFi Tapestop is ideal for adding classic tape-stop transitions on vocals, instruments, or full mixes. It can be used to create dramatic pitch drops before a drop, or subtle pitch variations for lo-fi textures. The Dust and Muffle controls let you match the noise and tone to vintage recordings.
With long slowdown times, you can create cinematic risers or tension by slowing a sound over several seconds. For rhythmic use, sync to BPM and trigger stops on beats. The retriggerable nature allows stutter-like effects, and the curved shape options can simulate different tape machine characteristics.
