Purpose and Design

TAPEDESK is designed to bring a full analog mixing workflow into a single plugin, eliminating the need to chain separate console and tape emulations. It recreates the physical connection between a tape machine and console, automating the signal flow that audio would take: preamp, tape recording, playback, and console mix bus.

This integrated approach simplifies achieving the warm sound of analog mixing. The plugin features precise metering at every stage, scribble strips for notes on the panel, and meter calibration with four sensitivity options. It is engineered for very low CPU usage so it can be placed on all tracks in a project.

Tape Machine and Console Emulation

The tape machine is a hyper-realistic simulation of a 2-inch 24-track unit from a renowned UK studio. Every part of the sound path is modeled, and you can control parameters like tape speed and head biasing to shape the tonal palette. This provides flexible harmonics and saturation.

Three full console emulations are included. The S4000 offers a wide, aggressive character suited to rock, metal, and pop. The N80 delivers a rich, warm English sound for classic vibes. The T88 provides a thick, fat tone with a distinctive midrange push.

Tube Bias and Distortion

The Bias knob controls tube current, affecting harmonic content. Under-biased settings produce a thinner sound that breaks up easily, medium bias gives minimal distortion for simple warming, and over-biased settings yield a fat, harmonically rich tone.

Three tube configurations are available. Program 0 (Triode) emphasizes 2nd harmonic distortion for musical warmth. Program 1 (Pentode) introduces odd harmonics, making the sound more aggressive while retaining valve character. Program 2 (Special) uses an unusual configuration that adds an extra octave at higher bias settings.

Workflow and Applications

TAPEDESK is inserted on individual tracks, just like any effect plugin. You can adjust tape speed, bias, console model, and tube settings to shape each track. The integrated design means you don’t need separate instances for tape and console; one plugin handles the entire analog chain.

It suits mixing sessions where you want consistent analog coloration across many tracks. Use lower bias for subtle warmth on vocals or guitars, or higher bias for aggressive saturation on drums. Console selection lets you tailor the flavor: S4000 for rock, N80 for classic pop, T88 for thick midrange.
