Nightfox Audio Retro Synthstack

Purpose and Core Sound

Retro Synthstack captures the character of vintage analog synthesizers by sampling 13 oscillators from classic models like Juno-60, Moog, and Prophet. Every key is sampled to preserve the quirks and irregularities of the original hardware, tracked through tube preamps for warmth.

The instrument lets you use each oscillator as a solo sound or stack and blend them in unlimited combinations. This approach creates hybrid tones that mix the distinct wave character of each synth, offering a fresh palette for leads and pads while retaining the authentic imperfections of the originals.

Key Capabilities

Shaping is handled with an AHDSR envelope, two customizable filters with ten types each, and three LFOs for gain, pitch, and filter. Five portamento controls add glide options. The built-in arpeggiator includes hold, latch, and MIDI thru modes, with adjustable steps, rate, octaves, swing, patterns, and velocity maps.

Each of the 13 instruments has its own mixing fader and per-instrument effects: pan, width, input delay, EQ, and compression. Five additional onboard effects—drive, phaser, chorus, delay, reverb—further refine the sound. Over 70 presets are included, and user presets can be saved and favorited.

Workflow and Integration

The plugin is designed for quick creative experimentation. Stacking up to 12 instruments within the interface lets you build complex sounds in seconds, and the arpeggiator and melody builder help generate patterns you might not play manually. This supports rapid idea generation during music production.

Automation is fully supported for all key parameters in major DAWs, and parameters can be mapped to MIDI CC for hands-on control. The standalone app provides independent use. Compatibility includes AU, AAX, and VST3 formats, but Garageband is not supported. The Garageband limitation is noted in the documentation.

Practical Applications

Use Retro Synthstack to craft hybrid synth leads by layering a Moog bass with a Prophet wave, then add an arpeggio pattern for movement. For pads, combine multiple oscillators and apply the filters and LFOs to create evolving textures. The effects section allows adding drive for grit or chorus for width.

The arpeggiator is ideal for generating rhythmic sequences in electronic, pop, or soundtrack work, with patterns like up, down, and random. The melody builder assists in creating melodic lines. Recording with the standalone app or DAW integration, you can perform variations in real time using CC mapping.
