BFD Horsepower is an Americana drum expansion for BFD3, featuring mix-ready Gretsch, Sabian, and Zildjian kits with stick and brush variants, ideal for blues, country, and rock.
Purpose
BFD Horsepower is an expansion pack for BFD3, designed to deliver authentic Americana drum sounds suitable for blues, alt-country, garage rock, and folk production. It captures the balance between vintage character and modern punch, providing mix-ready tones that fit easily into a variety of projects.
The expansion includes a Gretsch USA Custom kit with three toms, Sabian hi-hats, Zildjian cymbals, and a Gretsch snare with snares on and off. These components are recorded with careful attention to drum treatment, microphone selection, and processing, resulting in a cohesive and expressive drum set.
Key Capabilities
Horsepower includes both stick and brush kits, each presented in three versions: an unprocessed natural sound and two distinct processed styles. This yields a total of six usable kits, offering immediate inspiration while maintaining a high level of detail for playability with electronic drum kits.
The sound design features warm ribbon-mic room ambience and several character channels, including saturated vintage tones, custom plate processing, and a unique trash-can microphone for lo-fi dirt. Snare dampening with paper and tea towels leaves the rest untreated, tuned to the room for an open, vibrant sound.
Workflow
The processed versions are mix-ready, reducing the need for extensive external effects. The character mic channels provide flexible mixing options, letting users blend conventional room sound with vintage saturation or lo-fi textures. This supports a straightforward workflow from loading the kit to final mix.
The kits are designed for expressive playability, making them suitable for programming realistic drum parts with human feel. The variety of kits and processing options allows for quick experimentation across different songs, industry-standard BFD3 features like velocity layers and round robins are leveraged for detailed performances.
Practical Applications
This expansion is well-suited for songwriting and production in genres like country, blues, and alternative rock. Drummers and producers using electronic drums will find the tailored kits highly responsive, while the unprocessed versions offer a canvas for those who prefer adding their own effects.
The mix-ready nature of the processed kits means they can drop directly into sessions with minimal adjustment. The range from subtle vintage to trashy lo-fi makes the expansion versatile for everything from laid-back folk tracks to gritty garage rock, supporting creative tonal choices across a project.
