A bold cinematic percussion instrument blending synthesized and real-life recordings, offering four sample sources, twin manipulation pads, extensive modulation, and eight thematic snapshots for immediate, evolving rhythms.

Purpose and Core Concept
Aleatoric Rhythms is a sample-based instrument designed for cinematic scoring and expressive genre work. It combines synthesizer textures with field recordings captured via a portable studio microphone in real environments to produce gritty bass riffs, sneaky percussion loops, and immersive layers. The aim is immediate inspiration and a distinctive sound that stands out.
The engine is built around four individually adjustable sample sources, each drawing from a library of 200 categorized samples spanning bass, drum loops, FX, layers, melodics, and percussion. This structure allows rapid layering of contrasting elements, from tonal beats to ambient textures, to build complex rhythmic backdrops that evolve with your music.
Key Capabilities and Controls
Each of the four sources offers independent controls for EQ, envelope, filter, pitch shifting (±36 semitones), and panning, providing detailed timbral shaping. The ‘Source Movement’ pad adjusts gain distribution across sources, while the ‘Filter Movement’ pad controls cutoff and resonance, either globally or per source, enabling dynamic timbral shifts.
Modulation options include four LFOs and four ADSR envelopes assignable to any source parameter. An ‘Edit Effects’ menu houses nine modules: Chorus, Distortion, Lo-Fi (bitcrusher), Replika Delay, Spatial, Filter, Phasis (phaser), Convolution reverb, and Flair (a tuned flanger). A Randomize page offers selectable parameter randomization for generative inspiration.
Workflow and Presets
The included 80 snapshots are organized into ‘Action’, ‘Tensed’, ‘Sneaky’, and ‘Freaky’ subgroups, allowing fast auditioning and selection based on mood. Each snapshot is fully editable, so you can start with a close match and tweak it to fit your project. The randomization function can also spark new directions.
For deeper DAW integration, the single loop files are provided as categorized and named wave files, including key, BPM, and length information. This allows you to import individual loops directly into your sequencer and manipulate them outside the instrument, offering flexibility for arranging or sound design within your existing workflow.
Practical Applications
Aleatoric Rhythms excels at adding movement and tension to cinematic cues, thanks to the Source and Filter Movement pads that let the rhythm shift with on-screen action. It suits action scenes, tense buildups, or sneaky, stealthy passages. The expressive layers can also enhance electronic, ambient, or hybrid genres.
Use the Snapshots to quickly find a starting point, then layer sources for complex textures. Automation of the LFOs, envelopes, and movement pads can make the sound ‘breathe’ and evolve. For best results, adhere to the suggested tempo of 115 BPM, although the pitch and filter controls allow adaptation to other tempos.
