Chordscape is a Kontakt-based ambient instrument that emulates an endless tape machine, generating evolving, ever-changing dark soundscapes and textures from an 8GB source library with deep modulation and sequencing.

Core Concept and Sound Engine
Chordscape is an ambient playback engine designed around the idea of an infinite tape loop. Once started, it continuously produces sound that evolves and never repeats, driven by its internal engine rather than a typical one-shot playback. The instrument contains 8GB of custom-designed content built from acoustic recordings, natural ambiences, processed sound design, outboard effects, and synthesizers.
The sound content is organized into four sound sources, each with thirteen categories, providing a wide palette of dark pads, textures, leads, and risers. A built-in pop-up browser lets you preview and load sounds quickly, and mixer settings are remembered per sound. The raw material is crafted to work with the engine’s transformative capabilities, making it suitable for ambient, sound design, and scoring work.
Sequencing, Modulation, and Effects
A key feature is the four-channel sequencer, which allows each sound source to be gated or triggered independently. Sequences can be snapped to user-selected scales, with 55 onboard patterns provided for quick starting points. Dedicated start/stop key switches, assigned to specific MIDI notes, control the sequencer and each track during live performance.
Beyond sequencing, nearly every control can be modulated over time. A dedicated modulation system gives you between 4 and 128 steps per control, letting you create smooth movements, stepped voltages, or complex pulses. Four send FX slots, each with five selectable effects, allow per-channel signal routing, making it easy to swap effects live without re-patching. This combination of modulation and sequencing creates intricate, evolving soundscapes.
Snapshots and Preset Management
Chordscape includes a large collection of snapshots—421 presets shipped in version 1.2—covering ten categories such as Dark, Expansive, Emotive, Pads, and Mechanical. Snapshots allow you to load complete instrument states, including sound selections, mixer levels, sequencer settings, and modulation routings, quickly and easily. They are more convenient than managing individual NKI files.
The browser has been improved to start playback immediately when a sound is selected, so you can audition sounds while the browser window remains open. Additionally, the re-pitch key range now spans four octaves, and sequencer presets load from disk. With 200 new snapshots added in version 1.2, the library offers a rich starting point for exploring the engine’s capabilities.
Practical Use and Performance
Chordscape is designed for creating long-form ambient textures, dark drones, and evolving pads. It can also be used for sound design and cinematic effects. Because the engine never stops, it is ideal for generating endless background beds or live performance layers where variation is desired. Key switches allow you to start and stop the sequencer tracks on the fly during a performance.
To get the most out of Chordscape, you should place the snapshots in the correct folder. The instrument runs continuously, so you can automate and modulate parameters in real time. The included sequencer patterns and snapshots provide a fast way to get started, and the scale-snapping feature ensures that sequenced notes stay in key. This instrument is best suited for ambient, trailer music, and experimental electronic production.
