Audio effects and utilities

ChorX is a spatializer chorus effect from XILS-lab, modeling four vintage BBD-based chorus modes with a True Stereo Dynamic engine for expanded width, depth, and movement in your mixes.

ChorX

Purpose and Core Models

ChorX recreates the character of classic hardware chorus units by emulating their internal bucket-brigade delay structures and compander circuits. It offers four distinct chorus modes, each based on a different vintage instrument, and built around configurations of two or four BBD delay lines, some with phase tweaks. This gives you a range of tonal colors and textures.

The plug-in is designed to add space, depth, and width to any instrument, from simple widening to more complex, animated effects. Whether you need a subtle thickening or a dramatic spatial transformation, ChorX provides the tools to shape your sound without sacrificing the low end or transient attack.

True Stereo Engine and Spatialization

At the heart of ChorX is its True Stereo Dynamic engine, which goes beyond simple panning. It allows you to position each instrument within a stereo field, placing it more forward or further back, giving you control over the perceived depth and width of your mix. The engine uses independent left and right chorus structures for a rich, expansive sound.

This spatializer is far more than a panoramic tool; it dynamically expands the stereo width that a traditional chorus might add. You can place elements precisely in the soundstage, making it a powerful creative tool for mix design and sound design, letting you master the space around your instruments.

Workflow and Modulation

The Legacy/Advanced mode offers a fast workflow. You can quickly select a preset chorus model and tweak its overall amount, or dive into the Advanced section to adjust internal parameters like LFO rate and the amount of chorus from that specific model. Two 2-D pads make it easy to tweak multiple parameters simultaneously.

Dynamic modulation features let you add automatic changes to the rate and amount of the BBD lines, driven by an envelope follower or impulse follower. This allows the chorus to react to your playing dynamics, creating ever-evolving textures. A Dry tool can process percussive material while leaving transients dry, only adding chorus to the tail of the sound.

Practical Applications and Limitations

ChorX suits a wide range of uses: broaden synth pads, add movement to guitars, or create lush vocal textures. Its dynamic modulation makes it ideal for sound design, where continuously changing timbres are key. The Impulse Threshold feature protects the low end, so bass lines remain solid, while the Dry tool works well on drums, adding depth without smearing hits.

For mixing, it can place instruments in a stereo field with depth, complementing EQ and reverb. As a creative spatial effect, it excels at generating evolving, complex soundscapes. Note that all parameters are MIDI controllable, allowing automation integration. Some features, like the specific compander emulations, are fixed per mode, requiring you to choose a mode that fits your target sound.

Key features

  • Four vintage BBD-based chorus modes (Synthex, CS-80, Dim-D, V+ 330)
  • True Stereo Dynamic engine for width and depth control
  • Legacy/Advanced workflow with 2-D pads for tweaking
  • Envelope follower and impulse follower for dynamic modulation
  • Dry mode that leaves transients unprocessed
  • Advanced preset management and full MIDI controllability

Best for

Best for producers and sound designers seeking a versatile, spatial chorus that can add authentic vintage character, dynamic width, and depth to vocals, synths, or drums, with precise control over stereo placement.
