IK Multimedia FAME Studio Reverb

Authentic Studio Capture

T-RackS FAME Studio Reverb is a convolution reverb plug-in that recreates nine acoustic spaces from FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. This includes two live rooms, five iso booths, an EMT plate reverb, and the newly restored echo chamber. Each space offers Modern and Vintage modes, doubling the available variations.

Developer IK Multimedia worked directly with FAME to document both microphone placements and performer positions used on historic recordings. Selecting the instrument you are processing automatically repositions both the virtual source and microphones within the room. This aims to reproduce the exact sound captured for iconic sessions by artists such as Aretha Franklin and Duane Allman.

Console and Preamp Modeling

The plug-in includes console preamp modeling to add the sonic character of the studio’s original mixing desks. Studio A is modeled on a Neve 8232, while Studio B uses an SSL 6056 E formerly owned by Stevie Ray Vaughan. Both can be switched to use FAME’s original Universal Audio 610, hand-built for the studio.

These console models are available per space, letting you dial in a vintage or more modern flavor. The UA 610 option specifically aims to replicate the sound of FAME’s earliest hits from the 1960s. This adds an extra layer of tonal coloration beyond the reverb tails, contributing to a more authentic overall signal path.

VRM Technology and Controls

The plugin relies on IK Multimedia’s Volumetric Response Modeling (VRM), an advanced hybrid convolution technique. It captures both a broad and a focused reverb pattern for each room. A dedicated SPREAD control lets you choose between BROAD for sources like drums and vocals, or FOCUSED for guitar amps and brass.

Tone shaping includes pre-delay, decay time, high-pass and low-pass filters, and high and low shelving EQs. You can select mono or stereo mic pairs, adjust width, and set dry and wet levels with solo buttons. When using the live rooms, two additional faders control mono room ambience, which can be mixed into the stereo signal or used alone.

Workflow and Integration

As a T-RackS plug-in, FAME Studio Reverb can operate as a standalone insert or within the T-RackS 5 shell. The shell is a modular environment supporting up to 16 processors with series and parallel routing, plus A/B/C/D comparison. This integration suits mixing, mastering, and sound design tasks.

For practical use, the instrument-specific presets speed up session setup by placing the virtual microphones correctly. The ability to use the echo chamber or plate provides options beyond standard halls. Live room ambience faders allow creating width or mono effects. The plug-in aims to bring this legendary studio’s sound to any DAW.
