Virtual instruments and libraries

Largo 2 is a redesigned wavetable synthesizer plugin from Waldorf, featuring scalable UI, 68 classic wavetables, multilayer architecture, and deep modulation for modern music production.

Largo 2

Core Synthesis Engine

Largo 2 builds its sound on three oscillators per voice. Two of these are wavetable oscillators that draw from 68 wavetables originating from iconic Waldorf and PPG instruments like the Microwave, Wave, Q, and Blofeld. Each of these two oscillators includes a sub oscillator. The third is a VA waveform oscillator, and there is also a noise generator.

The oscillators support classic synthesis techniques including hard sync, ring modulation, and frequency modulation (OSC FM). This combination allows for a wide range of timbres, from classic analog-style waveforms to complex, evolving digital spectra. The sub oscillators add weight and depth, making it easy to create rich basses and leads.

Filters and Modulation

The signal path features two independent multimode filters per voice, with 12/24 dB per octave low-pass, band-pass, high-pass, and notch responses, plus comb and formant filter types. The formant filters mimic the human vocal tract, allowing vowel morphing between a, e, i, o, and u via the cutoff parameter for choir-like effects. Filters can be routed in series or parallel.

Modulation is extensive. Four ultrafast envelopes with selectable types and loop modes, and three LFOs, one with a 16-step drawable waveform, provide movement. A 16-slot modulation matrix supports many sources and destinations, and complex modifiers can combine multiple sources using operations like addition, multiplication, and logic functions. Modulation speeds can reach into the audio range.

Multilayer Architecture and Effects

Largo 2 allows up to four layers per sound, each with its own filters, envelopes, LFOs, and effect slots. This multilayer design enables complex layered patches that blend multiple timbres. Each layer has two effect slots, offering chorus (four or six stages), reverb, delay, phaser, flanger, drive, EQ, and bass boost, ideal for creating lush pads and strings.

The instrument provides up to 256 voices of polyphony and can operate in mono, legato, or unison modes. It supports four independent parts, with four stereo outputs or a single stereo sum. This architecture makes Largo 2 suitable for multitimbral setups and complex sound design.

Interface, Arpeggiator, and Preset Management

The redesigned user interface is scalable for modern 5K or Full HD laptop displays. The powerful arpeggiator includes standard functions plus user-defined patterns up to 16 steps, syncable to MIDI clock. Host automation covers almost all parameters, and MIDI controller automation is available for the most important parameters.

A built-in file browser and program manager allow drag-and-drop loading, saving, and rearranging of sounds directly on disk or within a bank. The included patches feature 16 banks from various sound designers, with a category filter and pro patch list. Largo 2 remains compatible with existing Largo 1 patches and sound sets.
