Virtual instruments and libraries

MiniDust is an affordable polyphonic synthesizer from Sound Particles, offering two oscillators, spatial sound tools, and immersive output formats for modern music production.

MiniDust

Purpose and Design

MiniDust is a polyphonic synthesizer that builds on the spatial audio technology of SkyDust 3D while reducing the oscillator count to two. This makes it accessible for musicians of all levels, delivering expressive sound design without the complexity of a larger synth.

The instrument retains Sound Particles’ signature spatial tools, allowing users to position sounds in 3D space. It includes over 250 presets, MPE compatibility, and a randomness feature for creative exploration. Whether used in a stereo mix or an immersive setup, MiniDust is designed to be flexible and intuitive.

Key Sound Engine Features

The synthesis core is built around two oscillators, more than 190 waveforms, and 70 waveform modifiers for shaping timbre. Four noise types—white, brown, binary, and pink—add texture, while multiple envelope generators (EGs) and LFOs provide modulation depth. Two additional EGs and LFOs expand control possibilities.

Six filter types, including low pass, high pass, band pass, peak, low shelf, and high shelf, can be applied per oscillator. Keyboard and velocity mapping let you sculpt response dynamically. Pitch EG and LFO, pitch convergence, and random behaviors further enhance expressive control for evolving sounds.

Modulation and Arpeggiation

A flexible modulation matrix lets you route sources to destinations, with filtering by category and a curve editor for precise control. This supports everything from subtle filter sweeps to complex parameter animation, making it easy to design movement within a patch.

The built-in arpeggiator and sequencer offer seven modes, step keyboards, and parameter sequences. You can create polyphonic sequences up to 128 steps, sync to scale, and even use a ‘snap to scale’ function for musical results. This is ideal for generating rhythmic patterns and evolving melodic ideas.

Spatial Audio and Output Formats

MiniDust shines in spatial audio production. A spatial sequencer, envelope generators, and LFOs control sound position over time. Independent oscillators, movement modifiers, divergence, and a special panner allow precise placement in 3D space, with visual feedback via 3D views and SOFA support.

Output format support is extensive, including mono, stereo (with variants like MS, XY, and Blumlein), binaural for headphones, Ambisonics up to sixth order, and a wide range of multichannel layouts from stereo to 11.1.8 and beyond. This makes it suitable for music, film, games, VR, and immersive installations.
