Pianology

A Curated Trio of Pianos

Rhodes Pianology offers intimate access to three meticulously sampled instruments that have shaped recordings across genres and decades. The American grand is a classic Model D with a warm, vibrant tone and wide dynamic range. The Japanese upright is a U-series model known for its bright yet earthy character, ideal for contemporary scoring and jazz.

The Japanese electric grand features real strings and pickups, delivering the shimmering, direct sound heard in ’80s pop and rock. Each piano was prepared, voiced, and sampled by the Rhodes engineering team, capturing nuance and depth that feel alive under the fingers. This collection brings rare instruments from renowned studios into your own projects.

An Intuitive, Expressive Interface

Pianology’s interface is designed for immediate playability, with a clean layout that prioritizes clarity and speed. Global controls include Timbre Shift, Global Tune, Mechanical Noise, and Lid Position (on the grand only). Timbre Shift can transform each piano’s character, turning a bright grand dark and moody or making an upright metallic and cutting.

The Amp and Mic section provides four amplifier models and dynamic or condenser microphone options, offering natural acoustic depth or characterful amped tones. Additional modules include a preamp, three-band EQ with sweepable mid, a piano-voiced compressor, chorus, phaser, DAW-syncable delay, and CP-style stereo tremolo. Dedicated Rhodes reverbs—Stage, Arena, Room, Hall, Spring, and Plate—complete the tonal palette.

Presets and Personalization

Pianology’s preset system stores every visible control, allowing instant recall of complete sound setups and the creation of a personal piano library. Instruments can be switched independently of presets, so you can audition a Grand preset on the Upright with a single click. This workflow encourages creative exploration without disrupting your session.

Velocity Curve and Velocity Depth controls let you match each instrument to your controller and playing style for a natural, personalized response. The efficient design ensures optimized CPU usage, and the full library occupies approximately 14 GB. All modules have individual power switches, and every control supports alt-click reset and right-click MIDI assignment for seamless hardware integration.

Workflow and Applications

Pianology suits composing, recording, and performing, with a sound that adapts to any genre. The American grand excels in solo passages and full-bodied performances, while the Japanese upright fits intimate singer-songwriter pieces and understated jazz. The electric grand cuts through mixes with its shimmering voice, perfect for pop and electronic tracks.

For workflow, presets streamline setup across songs, and instrument switching speeds up experimentation. Use the Timbre Shift to re-voice pianos for specific moods—darken the grand for ambient textures, or add warmth to the electric grand. The built-in effects and amps eliminate external processing needs, making Pianology a complete environment for crafting classic piano tones with clarity and precision.
