Audio effects and utilities

Reality VR by DSpatial transforms Pro Tools into a 3D binaural workstation, integrating reverb, panning, and mixing for immersive audio. It supports up to 48 loudspeaker outputs, Ambisonics, binaural playback, and real-time convolution with an IR modeler.

Reality VR

Purpose and Core Concept

Reality VR redefines traditional reverb, panning, and mixing by unifying them into a single workflow. It turns Pro Tools into a native 3D binaural workstation, allowing you to create mixes that translate to loudspeaker setups of up to 48 outputs, Ambisonics, or binaural playback. This approach lets you produce one mix that remains immersive across different playback systems.

Version 2.0 adds a Simplified mode, an exclusive Ambients tool, and mutes/solos for bed inputs. Centralized control streamlines per-channel functions. Six new binaural modes expand the spatial palette. These enhancements maintain compatibility with all DSpatial products, ensuring your sessions remain portable and future-proof.

Key Capabilities and Features

Reality VR includes real-time convolution reverb with a binaural impulse response modeler, plus two reverb models: Space Model and Room Builder. It handles up to 100 mono inputs and 100 bed inputs, with binaural, stereo 2D, and stereo 3D modes. Ambisonic inputs support FuMa and ambiX, while outputs can be FOA FuMa, FOA ACN, or 2nd HOA ACN.

A 360-degree equirectangular view and editing capabilties allow intuitive spatial placement. The library of impulse responses includes outdoor IRs (available in Ambisonics mode only). Multi-touch with 10 points is supported, and proximity/distance effects, Doppler, inertia, walls, and doors add realism. Immersive tools include Space, rear and top rear center force, and 40 groups.

Workflow and Integration

As a Pro Tools native extension, Reality VR simplifies immersive mixing. You can design speaker configurations with the Speaker Set designer and import session tools for efficient setup. The monitoring section includes dimmer and volume controls. Offline mode renders faster than real-time, useful for quick auditions or final exports.

The product is upward and downward compatible with all DSpatial versions, which means sessions can be shared and opened in different configurations. This flexibility lets you start with binaural monitoring and later adapt to larger loudspeaker systems without re-mixing. The centralized control solos and mutes improve workflow when working with many individual beds.

Practical Applications

Reality VR suits post-production for film, game audio, and VR/AR content. Its binaural capabilities make it ideal for headphone-based workflows, while Ambisonics output caters to interactive audio engines. The room builder and spatial effects support creating virtual acoustic environments with realistic reflections and obstruction.

For music production, the simplified mode and multi-touch interface offer hands-on control of spatial placement. The inclusion of Doppler and inertia contributes to dynamic object movement. With 40 groups and flexible routing, complex scenes become manageable. The offline rendering speeds up delivery for content requiring immersive audio formats.
