A plug-in emulation of the SSL Fusion hardware’s high-frequency smoothing circuit, designed to tame harshness with transparent compression, added mix, auto gain, and built-in help.

Purpose
The SSL Fusion HF Compressor plug-in recreates the high-frequency smoothing circuit from the SSL Fusion hardware processor. It targets only the high frequencies, providing quick compression and a tape-like roll-off to reduce unwanted harshness in mixes or individual stems. The ratio, attack, and release are pre-optimized for transparency.
Beyond the hardware’s controls, the plug-in adds MIX and AUTO GAIN. MIX lets you blend the processed signal non-destructively, while AUTO GAIN applies automatic makeup gain to the compressed frequencies. This makes it easy to find the right amount of smoothing without affecting the overall balance.
Key Capabilities
The plug-in includes simple THRESHOLD and X-OVER controls for quick setup. A LISTEN function solos the sibilant frequencies being compressed, helping you hear exactly what is removed. Feedback comes from a Gain Reduction History graph, a meter, and the classic hardware LED, all showing when the circuit is active.
Built on the SSL Plug-in Engine, it supports cross-platform preset management, A/B comparing, and undo/redo. A built-in help system appears when you click the question mark and hover over the GUI. ECO mode reduces latency and CPU usage, making it suitable for tracking and recording.
Workflow
In a mix, insert the plug-in on a bus or master to smooth overall high-frequency harshness. For individual tracks, use it on vocals to reduce sibilance, on electric guitars to soften brittle edges, or on drum overheads to tame cymbals. The MIX control lets you dial in a subtle effect, and AUTO GAIN helps maintain perceived loudness.
Start with the threshold low and adjust the crossover to focus on the problem area. Use LISTEN to identify the exact frequencies being compressed, then rely on the gain reduction meter to see how much is applied. For extreme settings, try AUTO GAIN on drums to keep cymbals crisp while reducing harshness.
Practical Applications
This plug-in is ideal for mixing and mastering tasks where high-frequency harshness is an issue. It works well on complete mixes, individual stems, or single tracks. Use it on vocals to remove sibilance, on guitars to smooth pick scratch, and on cymbals to reduce excessive brightness.
Its transparent nature means it can stay on a mix bus throughout a session. For recording, ECO mode reduces latency. The built-in presets from producers Adrian Hall, Caesar Edmunds, and Sean Divine provide starting points across different sources. The simple controls make it accessible even for quick adjustments.
