Veevum Astra is a Kontakt instrument by Audiofier for ambient and cinematic music, offering 100 sound sources, multiple playing modes, an arpeggiator, effects, and randomization to craft evolving textures.

Sound Sources and Selection
Veevum Astra is an ambient and cinematic instrument built around 100 sound sources. You can choose these sources through the Cells Beehive interface, which resembles a honeycomb, or use randomization to discover unexpected combinations. The sources can be filtered by categories specific to the instrument, helping you narrow down suitable sounds.
Up to 50 sound sources can be active at once, giving you a large palette to work with. The entire patch can be randomized as well, affecting parameters like effects, portamento, and unison. This feature supports fast exploration and can generate fresh ideas without manual tweaking, making it useful for sound design sessions.
Playing Modes and Textures
Once you have selected sound sources, Veevum Astra offers several ways to play them. RANDOM mode assigns a different source to each note you play, creating variety across the keyboard. STACK mode plays all active sources together, while SPREAD STACK distributes them across the keyboard, allowing for playable layered textures.
FULL STACK mode takes layering further by crossfading between sources using individual volume LFOs, creating slowly evolving textures. This is particularly effective for pads and drones, letting you build sonic beds that change character over time. These modes give you flexible approaches to performance and composition.
Arpeggiator, Ornaments, and Effects
Veevum Astra includes an arpeggiator that works with RANDOM mode to generate sequences of notes, triggering different sounds each time. This can produce intricate rhythmic patterns and melodic variations. The Ornamento engine adds extra notes based on user-defined intervals, enriching arpeggios or static pads; these notes can be quantized to a scale via the Scale Manager.
Step Volume and Step Filter effects add rhythmic movement to the sound. The Convolver offers unique impulse responses that can dramatically alter the tone, and activating Random FX applies a special convolver on specific notes. Additional effects include portamento, delay, reverb, phaser, rotator, and up to six-voice unison with pitch LFOs, all contributing to a comprehensive sound-shaping toolkit.
Workflow and Practical Use
Veevum Astra is designed for producers and composers who need quick access to complex, evolving sounds. The randomization and filtering features speed up sound design, allowing you to browse through many variations efficiently. The playing modes and arpeggiator support both melodic sequences and ambient drones, making the instrument versatile across genres.
In practice, you can use Veevum Astra for film scoring, sound design, or electronic music production. The combination of random sound selection and stack modes suits generative textures, while the ornaments and scale manager help keep musical ideas in key. The built-in effects let you shape the final timbre within the instrument, reducing the need for external processing.
