Virtual instruments and libraries

VHorns Saxophones by Acousticsamples is a hybrid sample-modeling virtual instrument bundle featuring eight saxophones with continuous airflow control, no keyswitches, and detailed microphone placement for realistic performances.

VHorns Saxophones

Instrument Bundle

VHorns Saxophones includes eight instruments: two altos, two sopranos, two tenors, and two baritones. Each pair is performed by a different musician, with one player using a jazz-oriented technique that includes more breath and another delivering a cleaner tone suited for classical repertoire.

This dual-player approach gives you immediate tonal variety without loading separate libraries. Every instrument uses the same unified interface, so switching between saxophones is straightforward, whether you are writing a solo line or layering a full section.

Hybrid Engine and Air Flow Control

The engine combines a sample-based sound source with modeling techniques, built on the proprietary Harmonic Alignment Technology. This reproduces timbre changes from soft to loud playing while keeping each instrument around 100MB with presets and retina graphics included.

Articulations are performed directly, not triggered by keyswitches. You control air flow with a MIDI controller, breath controller, or wind controller like an EWI or Aerophone. Vibrato can be set to automatic, time-dependent, or fully manual to mimic jaw movement, and legato transitions are captured with pitch bends and noise details.

Recording and Placement

Each saxophone was recorded with four selectable microphone positions, allowing you to shape the tone as if choosing mics in a studio. You can apply reverb and EQ to these positions independently to match your mix.

A Virtual Space feature uses convolution to simulate ensemble recording. You place each musician in a stereo field, and when using multiple tracks, it recreates the realistic depth and spread of a live horn section. This is especially useful for arranging big band or orchestral parts.

Workflow and Ensemble Tools

The interface is designed for quick performance without complex setup. You can play a keyboard and use modulation or a breath controller to shape dynamics, or connect a wind controller and select the appropriate MIDI mapping. Most settings, including legato behavior and timbre, can be randomized for natural variation.

For ensemble writing, loading multiple instruments allows them to play unisons together. You can transpose each saxophone by a fixed interval and set all eight to play the same scale, so a single keyboard performance sounds like a full harmonized section. This streamlines arranging for saxophone groups.

Key features

  • Eight saxophones: two each of alto, soprano, tenor, and baritone
  • Hybrid sample and modeling engine using Harmonic Alignment Technology
  • No keyswitches; articulations controlled by air flow and MIDI dynamics
  • Adjustable vibrato with automatic, time-based, or manual modes
  • Four microphone positions for each instrument
  • Virtual Space convolution for realistic ensemble placement
  • Includes ensemble transposition and unison features

Best for

Best for composers and producers seeking realistic saxophone parts without sample library bulk. It suits jazz, classical, and film scoring, especially when you need expressive wind control, quick ensemble arrangements, or authentic legato lines from a keyboard or wind controller.
