Audio effects and utilities

GotoEQ by Klevgrand is a vintage-style passive tube program equalizer with dynamic mid bands, continuous frequency selection, and a classic boost/attenuation low-end trick, reimagined for modern production.

Purpose and Heritage

GotoEQ is a fresh take on a classic passive tube-based program equalizer, redesigned for the digital era. It preserves the vintage sound while adding dynamic capabilities. The plugin is built around two shelving filters, two parametric mid bands, and a high-pass filter, with continuous frequency selection across all four bands.

The low shelf features dual boost and attenuation controls, enabling the classic ‘low-end trick’—simultaneously boosting and cutting to sculpt low-mid frequencies. A similar ‘high-end trick’ is possible on the high shelf. This combination brings a musical, analog-inspired workflow to digital mixing.

Key Capabilities

The core innovation lies in the two mid bands, which offer dynamic attenuation. A finely tuned compression algorithm makes these bands react dynamically to the signal, providing automatic de-essing or de-harshing. Each mid band has gain, Q, and dynamic attenuation controls, allowing precise tuning.

The high-pass filter offers fixed 20, 40, or 80 Hz settings to clean up low-end rumble. All filters provide continuous frequency selection, and individual band bypass switches are available. Global input and output gain controls (±24 dB) ensure optimal signal level for the dynamic processors.

Workflow and Operation

Set the input level carefully to let the dynamic processors operate effectively, using the peak metering for input or output. The VU meters help monitor levels visually. The shelving filters work in a classic style, while the dynamic EQs behave differently, using a built-in processor to attenuate the signal automatically.

The preset library offers starting points, but the controls are intuitive enough for hands-on tweaking. A global bypass is available for quick A/B comparisons. The dual boost and attenuation controls require both to be above zero to achieve the ‘Pultec’ effect, making the workflow extremely flexible.

Practical Applications

Use the low-end trick to create a low-mid scoop on bass tracks, simultaneously cutting and boosting the low shelf. For vocals, engage dynamic attenuation on the high-mid band to de-ess naturally without manual automation. The high shelf can add air, while the high-end trick ‘scoops’ high-mids for a smoother top end.

Dynamic attenuation on the low and high mid bands gives control over the ‘nose’ of bass tracks. On a mix or bus, use light settings and mild compression to subtly EQ the entire signal without drastic coloration. These techniques make GotoEQ suitable for tracking, mixing, and mastering stages.
