Purpose and Origin
Aeolian Fan Harp is a distinctive virtual instrument created by Soundiron from a hand-built instrument by Dust Bowl Guitars. It revives the ancient Greek wind harp concept with a modern twist: a 120mm PC fan mounted under the strings produces its own airflow. The harp has steel-wound strings and electric guitar pickups, giving it a hybrid tone between acoustic and electric.
The source library is nearly 14 GB and was sampled in close stereo and direct line-out positions. This design lets you blend an electric character with a more acoustic response. The instrument is playable with the fan off for a baritone guitar-like sound, or with the fan on for lush drones and evolving textures, making it a practical tool for composers seeking unconventional timbres.
Key Capabilities
The Kontakt interface includes multiple articulations, such as sustains, e-bow effects, mutes, and harmonics, captured with the fan both on and off. The sample set totals 3,411 stereo files at 24-bit/48 kHz resolution, stored as uncompressed PCM wavs. You can switch between articulations seamlessly, crossfade layers, and control swell, attack, release, offset, and vibrato.
A flexible LFO system lets you assign modulation to parameters like filter or pitch, with selectable shapes, tempo sync, and fade-in. You can place up to 18 different DSP modules—such as phaser, flanger, delay, distortion, amp/cab simulators, compressors, EQ, and rotator—into 10 available slots in any order. Convolution reverb is included with 99 room, hall, chamber, and outdoor impulse responses, plus 40 custom FX impulses for more radical effects. Twenty sound-designed presets and a bank of factory FX chains provide starting points. The interface is automation-ready, so you can modulate parameters in your host or in Kontakt standalone mode, making it suitable for detailed sound design workflows.
