Alto Xylophone — Free Download

Virtual instruments and libraries

A deeply sampled Orff-tuned xylophone library with three instruments, two mic positions, round robins, velocity layers, ambient soundscapes, and a flexible Kontakt interface for creative percussion.

Alto Xylophone

Purpose and Instruments

This library captures three related xylophones in a dry studio. The central instrument is an alto xylophone with 13 rosewood bars tuned to a C major scale from C4 to A5, played with felt mallets. Its tone is warm and plunky with a fast decay, typical of classroom Orff instruments.

Two soprano xylophones are included an octave higher. One has 13 notes (C5-A6) with a rounded, playful timbre; the other has 12 notes (C5-G6) with a crisp, biting tone, performed with mallets and wooden cube hammers. All were recorded with two microphone positions, capturing multiple round robins and velocity layers per note.

Key Capabilities

The Kontakt interface provides a wide range of sound-shaping controls, including swell, attack, release, offset, vibrato, filter, pitch, and articulation switching. It also supports cross-fading and layering, plus an LFO system with selectable shapes and modulation targets, enabling dynamic performance.

A customizable arpeggiator offers velocity tables, direction, timing, swing, randomization, and duration. The key and scale lock system constrains notes to common scales for melodic work. A modular FX rack includes 18 DSP modules assignable to ten slots, plus a convolution reverb with 99 rooms and 40 custom impulse responses.

Workflow and Flexibility

The library includes 20 ambient organic soundscapes and 20 custom FX presets, providing ready-made creative starting points. The FX rack chain factory presets further streamline sound design, while the key and scale lock system simplifies live performance and composition in a host environment.

All parameters are automation-ready in a DAW or Kontakt’s standalone mode. The open-format Kontakt library requires the full retail version of Kontakt 5.5 or later; the free Kontakt Player runs it only in time-limited demo mode. The sample directories are unlocked for use in other wav-compatible software.

Practical Applications

The warm, plunky tones of the alto and soprano xylophones add acoustic percussive accents across genres, from horror to jazz. The fast decay and diatonic tuning suit melodic lines, glisses, and rhythmic patterns, while the captured percussive knocks provide additional texture.

The ambient patches and FX presets transform the wooden sounds into evolving soundscapes for film, game, or electronic music. The arpeggiator and scale lock facilitate harmonic exploration, and the convolution reverb allows placement in virtual spaces, making this library versatile for sound design and composition.
