DelGrain is a granular delay effect that combines tape delay, distortion, and filtering with a creative Disrupt Sphere for dynamic sound manipulation.

Granular Delay Core
DelGrain is a delay effect that plays back audio in a granular, or grainy, manner. The granular processing can be placed before, inside, after, or parallel to the delay, offering flexible routing for varied textures. The grain size and length are adjustable, and both can sync to tempo, ranging from 1ms to 1024ms for size and from 1/64 triple note to 1.1 dotted bar in sync mode.
A semi-tune feature allows pitch shifting by up to 12 semitones up or down, adding musical variation. The left and right granular delays run from 1ms to 4096ms, or in tempo-sync mode from 1/64 triple note to 1.1 dotted bar. This makes DelGrain particularly suited for rhythmic effects on drums and percussion loops, but it can also alienate vocals and sound effects.
Signal Chain and Filtering
Before the audio enters the granular delay, a distortion module with a rectify mode option can shape the signal. After the granular delay and filter combination, a filter section offers three modes: a combined 12dB high-pass and low-pass, a band-pass with Q control, and a vocal/vowel filter with vowel control. The filter can be placed at different points in the chain.
The delay includes a tape delay emulation with its own low-pass and high-pass filters, also ranging from 1ms to 4096ms or tempo-synced. Additional features include an equal feedback option for balanced stereo tails and a cross feedback option. The dry/wet and FX mix controls allow for precise blending of the effected and dry signals.
Disrupt Sphere and Modulation
The Disrupt Sphere-Slider is a unique control that can be connected to various delay parameters. Moving the sphere-slider dynamically changes multiple parameters at once. A spring feature allows the sphere-slider to return to the center in a tempo-based manner, enabling rhythmic changes. For automated movement, a lazy mode can modulate the sphere-slider in different directions, creating evolving modulation sounds.
An audio follower with a side chain input can influence various parameters, including the disrupt sphere-slider itself. The MIDI & mod 1-4 section provides additional control over DelGrain parameters, also including the disrupt sphere-slider. This extensive modulation capability allows for highly dynamic and expressive delay effects.
Practical Applications
DelGrain is designed for creative sound design and rhythmic processing. Its tempo-synced grain and delay times make it ideal for adding texture to drum loops and percussion. The granular semitone shifting can transform vocals into alien-like sounds or create unusual sound effects. The combination of distortion, filtering, and granular delay offers a wide palette for unique tones.
Using the disrupt sphere with the spring feature can produce rhythmic filter sweeps or pitch shifts that follow the track’s tempo. The audio follower with side chain allows the delay to react to a kick drum or other external signal, creating ducking or rhythmic gating effects. The multi-routing modes give flexibility to insert the granular effect exactly where needed.
