An authorized sampled Fazioli F278 concert grand, recorded at the Fazioli Concert Hall with three microphone positions and extensive resonance controls for realistic performances.

Authentic Captured Instrument
Gran Coda presents the Fazioli F278, the resident grand piano of the Fazioli Concert Hall in Sacile, Italy. Created in collaboration with Fazioli Pianoforti, it marks the first virtual instrument authorized by the manufacturer. The piano was prepared by Fazioli technicians and recorded by Paolo Principi in the hall.
The instrument offers three microphone perspectives: Close, suited for jazz and pop; Side, for classical contexts; and Binaural, which places the listener at the pianist’s position inside the hall. This variety enables flexible sonic shaping without requiring additional processing or external microphone setups.
Performance and Realism
The sample set captures up to 14 velocity layers per note, allowing smooth dynamic transitions from soft passages to powerful fortissimo. Natural decay is preserved with no looping, so sustained notes fade authentically. Release samples, damper noise, and sympathetic resonance are included with individual level controls.
These elements recreate the mechanical and acoustic behavior of a concert grand. The sympathetic resonance and release layers add subtle interaction between strings and dampers, making performances feel more connected and lifelike, especially in exposed solo or intimate settings. The instrument was tested and approved by Fazioli technicians in their laboratories.
Tonal Shaping and Controls
A built-in three-band equalizer permits tone adjustment, while a dynamic curve control lets you tailor response to your playing style or MIDI controller. A convolution reverb with adjustable parameters offers spatial depth, complementing the recorded ambience of the venue.
All controls are accessible without external effects, streamlining setup. The combination of EQ, dynamics, and reverb allows quick adaptation to different mixes, from dry close-miked pop to spacious classical productions. The sample content occupies 10 GB of storage and is delivered at 48 kHz, 24-bit resolution.
Workflow Considerations
For pop and jazz producers, the Close microphone position provides immediate clarity and presence, reducing the need for additional compression or EQ. Classical composers might favor the Side position to capture the hall’s natural ambience, while the Binaural option offers an immersive feel for headphone listening or experimental scoring.
The velocity layers and resonance controls encourage nuanced performances, suitable for detailed MIDI programming or live keyboard play. Because the instrument includes global tuning and dynamic shaping, you can commit to a final sound during tracking, saving time in the mixing stage. This flexibility makes it a practical choice for both studio and stage.
