Virtual instruments and libraries

A virtual instrument capturing a 1960s Italian accordion with detailed multi-sampling, including all registers, velocity layers, round-robin variations, and mechanical noises for authentic performances.

Vintage Accordion

Authentic Vintage Tone

Vintage Accordion is a virtual instrument built on a rare Italian accordion from the 1960s, made in Castelfidardo. The developer, Paolo Principi, conducted a detailed study of the instrument’s unique sonic character to capture its expressive range. High-resolution recording and meticulous editing ensure each sample is perfectly looped, preserving the original warmth and mechanical nuances.

The instrument includes all seven accordion registers, offering a comprehensive palette of timbres. Four velocity layers and two round-robin variations per layer provide dynamic realism and subtle natural variation between repeated notes. A filter simulates the harmonic changes that occur as the sound moves through its dynamic range, adding further authenticity.

Expressive Control and Noise

Performance realism is enhanced by separate recordings of key-on and key-off noises, capturing the mechanical clicks and release sounds of the physical instrument. Register change noises are also included, adding another layer of authenticity when switching between stops. These details help the virtual instrument feel responsive and alive in a mix.

The filter is modulated by expression (CC11), allowing for dynamic shaping of brightness and tone. A tremolo effect is controlled by the modulation wheel, providing classic accordion vibrato and movement. Each of the four main sound components—16′, 8′, 4′, and noise—has an adjustable volume, giving the user fine control over the overall blend.

Flexible Workflow

Vintage Accordion is designed for quick and intuitive use in a digital audio workstation. Key switches allow for rapid register changes during a performance, eliminating the need to click through menus. The instrument comes with separate presets for right-hand and left-hand parts, which is particularly useful for arranging or playing in real time.

The interface is straightforward, focusing on the essential controls needed for expressive play. This makes it suitable for both detailed studio work and live performance scenarios. The combination of velocity layers, round-robin, and noise samples ensures that MIDI programming can sound natural, reducing the need for excessive post-editing.

Practical Applications

This instrument is ideal for producers and composers seeking authentic folk, world, or vintage pop textures. Its expressive controls allow for everything from gentle, airy passages to forceful, reedy bursts. The included noises and register changes make it possible to create believable solo performances without requiring a physical accordion.

The left-hand presets facilitate the creation of chordal accompaniments, while the right-hand presets can carry melodies. This separation simplifies the process of building a full accordion arrangement in a track. Whether used for a subtle background layer or a featured solo, Vintage Accordion offers a practical solution for adding a human touch to virtual arrangements.
