Virtual instruments and libraries

Oro is a virtual instrument exploring Colombian metal instruments, including brass, organ, and percussion, processed through an acoustic synthesis engine for transformative sound design.

MNTRA Oro

Overview

Oro is the second release in the Portals series, capturing the sonic identity of Bogotá and Colombia’s musical heritage. It reimagines the legend of El Dorado as a creative hub rather than a mythical treasure, presenting metal instruments that arrived via the Caribbean and evolved across genres.

The collection includes valved brass, a pipe organ, metal percussion, and processed synth variations. These sounds were performed by local artists, blending traditional techniques with modern contexts. Oro’s core aim is to offer tools for musical transformation, rooted in respect for the cultures and musicians who shaped these traditions.

Instrumentation and Sound Design

Brass instruments form a significant part of Oro: a Bb trumpet, tenor trombone, sousaphone, and bombardino, each with articulations from long notes to flutters and glissandos. The pipe organ, recorded in a Bogotá concert hall, includes stops and pedals, while percussion spans surdo, repique, güira, cowbell, and cymbals.

Beyond acoustic sources, Oro features synth patches created by processing these instruments through analog and digital gear. These range from ambient pads and drones to distorted leads and lofi textures, offering a bridge between authentic performances and contemporary sound design.

Workflow in MNDALA 2

Oro operates within the MNDALA 2 engine, which allows deep manipulation of the source samples. Users can layer, modulate, and transform the metal instruments using the engine’s synthesis capabilities, enabling morphing between acoustic and processed states.

The Perform View, with animated artwork inspired by woven textiles and water, provides a visual interface for exploration. While not a rules-based sequencer, MNDALA 2 supports real-time control over parameters, making it suited for expressive play and sound design sessions where each gesture shapes the output.

Applications and Creative Use

Oro is suited for composers and producers seeking authentic Colombian brass and percussion for genres like salsa, porro, or chirimía, as well as for experimental sound designers. The brass can carry melodic lines or rhythmic stabs, while the organ adds textural depth.

The processed synth patches and soundscapes expand possibilities for cinematic scoring or ambient music. The nature recordings, such as jungle night or Caribbean seaside, provide immersive backdrops. Oro encourages reinterpreting traditional sounds in modern pop, dance, or electronic contexts, bridging heritage with innovation.
