Audio effects and utilities

Oxford Dynamics Native is a professional dynamics processor from Sonnox, combining gate, expander, compressor, and limiter with feed-forward architecture and side-chain EQ in one plugin.

Oxford Dynamics Native

Core Processing Architecture

Oxford Dynamics Native uses a feed-forward design where a tiny delay in the signal path lets the side-chain generate a precise control signal, aligning gain changes exactly with the audio. This allows accurate level control while preserving sound quality. All four processes share a single side-chain detector and gain element, keeping processing efficient.

The plugin organizes controls on separate pages for each process to manage its extensive parameter set. The mono and stereo versions include gate, expander, compressor, and limiter; the 5.1 Buss Compressor omits gate and expansion but adds a Sub Filter section.

Gate and Expander Controls

The gate acts as a switch: signals below the threshold are attenuated by the range control, with 4 dB of hysteresis before closing. Attack softens the opening edge, release sets closing time, and hold delays closure. It is ideal for suppressing background noise like tape hiss or cleaning up drums.

The expander adds a ratio control, allowing signal level to increase according to a set slope once the threshold is crossed. This is useful for lowering noise or enhancing the dynamic attack of percussive instruments such as drums and acoustic guitar.

Compressor and Limiter Functions

The compressor reduces gain beyond the threshold with ratios from 1:1 to 1000:1. Attack controls how quickly compression engages, allowing transients through at longer settings. Release sets recovery time, hold delays the release start, and soft smooths the threshold corner to hide compression. Make-up gain compensates for level reduction.

The limiter sets a fixed ceiling via the threshold, with feed-forward look-ahead at medium and fast attack settings to catch initial transients without exceeding the limit. It was designed for overload protection but also serves creative purposes. Attack, hold, and release ranges differ from the compressor’s.

Side-Chain EQ and Warmth

The side-chain EQ is a fully parametric two-band section. It can modify the side-chain frequency response for tasks like de-essing, or be used alone as a two-band EQ in the main path, or applied to both side-chain and signal path simultaneously.

The warmth control adds harmonically related signal with a tube-like character, providing up to 6 dB of increased level within the audio without exceeding digital maximum. Max trim fine-tunes peak level. This function operates independently of the dynamic processes.

Key features

  • Feed-forward architecture with look-ahead delay
  • Four gain processes: gate, expander, compressor, limiter
  • Parametric 2-band side-chain EQ usable as standalone EQ
  • Warmth control for harmonic enhancement
  • Separate control pages for each process
  • 1 version with Sub Filter section

Best for

Oxford Dynamics Native suits mixing and mastering engineers needing transparent level control, de-essing via side-chain EQ, and dynamic enhancement on drums or vocals. Its feed-forward design ensures precise gain changes, while warmth adds tonal character. Works for stereo and surround projects where accurate dynamics are critical.
