Purpose and Heritage

Overstayer M-A-S is a precise software emulation of the Overstayer M-A-S Model 8101, a harmonic shaper with a cult following. Developed in close collaboration with Overstayer founder Jeff Turzo, it recreates the hardware’s ability to increase apparent volume, smooth harsh transients, and bring forward the character and detail of sound sources.

It is designed to replace compression, limiting, and bus compression on individual tracks and buses, balancing mixes without the timing artifacts typical of dynamics processing. The plugin is officially licensed and component-modeled, aiming for high-fidelity saturation and peak bending.

Key Capabilities

The core M-A-S plugin offers six emphasis types: Classic M-A-S (mid to upper ranges), Low Bandwidth (highs and lows, leaving mids alone), Low Presence (upper-mid vocal clarity), High Presence (lower-high-range shimmer), Bass Distortion (thins bass), and Treble Distortion (tape-like smoothness).

Dual mode adds a second discrete stage in series for a more complex harmonic character, while 2nd mode shifts response toward secondary harmonics to brighten the sound. Auto-compensated levels on the Input include Auto Gain and To Dry features.

Extended Version and Modules

M-A-S Extended replaces the fixed emphasis types with resonant high- and low-pass filters (12 dB/octave) and a fully flexible 4-band parametric EQ with two shelves and two bells. This allows users to sculpt completely new distortion types and exercise precise control over emphasis.

Two additional modules are included: M-A-S for Amp Room, usable as a boost pedal before an amp or as a finalizer for guitar tones, and M-A-S for Modular, which thickens synth sections when patched within the Modular platform. These modules integrate the saturation into sound creation for guitars and synths.

Workflow and Practical Use

M-A-S is suited for individual tracks, buses, mix buses, and masters. Its simple interface provides quick control over emphasis, making it a practical tool for adding energy to dull vocals, gluing a bus, or giving a final mix edge. The Dual mode is noted for reviving vocals that become dull after saturation.

In Amp Room, M-A-S can push back with an amp-like feel, useful for getting guitar tracks to sit in a mix. In Modular, it adds high-fidelity saturation to synth patches. The five new emphasis types expand on the original hardware’s single fixed mode, offering versatility for different frequency-focused tasks.

Key features

  • Two plugins: M-A-S (six emphasis types) and M-A-S Extended (resonant filters and 4-band EQ)
  • Includes modules for Amp Room and Modular
  • Component-modeled after the Overstayer hardware
  • Dual and 2nd modes for complex harmonics and brightness
  • Auto-compensated input levels (Auto Gain, To Dry)
  • Replaces compression/limiting without timing artifacts
  • Official collaboration with Jeff Turzo

Best for

Best for mix engineers, producers, and sound designers seeking high-fidelity harmonic saturation to add energy, glue, and edge to individual tracks, buses, or full mixes. Also suits guitarists and synth users who want a versatile saturation module within Amp Room or Modular environments.
