FilterField is a four-filter effects plugin from Rob Papen, blending analog-modeled filters with an XY field for morphing, plus distortion, modulation, and delay effects.

Core Filter Engine
FilterField centers on four filter modules that can be arranged in parallel or serial signal paths. Each module draws from a palette of thirty-two filter types, including analog-modeled designs, comb filters, vowel emulations, EQ curves, all-pass and phaser filters, plus special modes like ring modulation, amplitude modulation, frequency shifting, and frequency-modulated or feedback-based low-pass, high-pass, and band-pass variants.
A dedicated distortion section with twenty-one types can be placed before or after the filters, adding harmonic texture. This flexible routing allows you to shape tonal color from subtle coloration to aggressive character, making the tool suitable for sound design, mixing, and live performance tweaks.
XY Morphing and Vector Control
The signature XY field controls and crossfades between the four filters, enabling real-time morphing across filter types. In Vector mode, the X and Y axes mix the filters and can also morph a selectable set of parameters simultaneously, with four additional free-target assignments per axis for custom control. You can record and play back XY movements in tempo-synced patterns.
An audio follower responds to the input or other sources, creating side-chain-like effects, and each filter has its own follower amount for precise response. Dedicated LFOs for each filter plus two free LFOs with multiple waveforms and tempo sync options further animate the sound, while an eight-slot modulation matrix expands routing possibilities using internal or MIDI sources.
Effects and Workflow
Beyond filtering, FilterField includes an FX section with a high-pass filter, a gater for rhythmic chopping, and a stereo tape-delay featuring equal-feedback behavior for stable echoes. These extras integrate into the main signal chain, letting you build complex patches in one interface without external plugins.
The bank manager organizes presets, and the included presets double as starting templates. Interface scaling options (100%, 150%, and 200%) support comfortable editing across different screen resolutions. This all-in-one design streamlines experimentation, from subtle EQ sweeps to aggressive rhythmic textures.
Practical Applications
FilterField suits sound designers crafting evolving pads or risers via XY automation, producers shaping drum loops with gating and delay, and mix engineers applying filter-based side-chain effects using the audio follower. The parallel and serial modes allow simple dual-filter sweeps or complex multi-band processing.
Live performers can manipulate the XY pad in real time for expressive filter changes, while the tempo-synced LFOs and recorded XY patterns add movement in electronic music. The distortion module adds grit to synth leads or bass, and the tape delay creates spatial depth, making FilterField a versatile tool for studio and stage.
