Audio effects and utilities

Oxford Dynamic EQ is a five-band dynamic equalizer that applies processing only when needed, preserving the original tone while automatically controlling problem frequencies.

Purpose

Traditional EQ often forces a compromise when taming boomy or harsh resonances, because static cuts can dull the rest of the performance. Automation might restore dynamics but costs time and can sound unnatural. Multiband compressors sometimes add complexity without truly solving the musical problem.

Oxford Dynamic EQ is designed to apply just the right amount of processing exactly when the offending frequency appears, then relax when the signal returns to normal. Its five bands use the musical Type-3 EQ curve, providing transparent control over individual sources, groups, and the mix bus without the artifacts commonly associated with static filters or multiband dynamics.

Key Capabilities

Each of the five bands includes proportional-Q behavior, widely regarded as a musical response: bandwidth widens as gain decreases, which keeps adjustments sounding natural even with deep cuts. Bands can overlap freely without static phase distortion or low-frequency pumping, preserving the integrity of the original recording while offering flexible control.

The plug-in can detect and process from mono, stereo, mid, or side channels independently. Each band offers internal or external sidechain routing, and the GUI clearly maps the signal flow, making complex multiband setups easy to understand and edit.

Workflow

Setting up is fast: choose a band, select the frequency you need to control, and adjust the threshold for when that band should start working. You can use conventional level detection, or switch to the innovative onset detection, which triggers processing based on transient attack rather than sustained level—ideal for drums and percussion.

The plug-in supports upwards and downwards compression, as well as upwards and downwards expansion, giving you precise command over how the gain reacts above and below the threshold. This flexible set of gain laws makes it suitable for everything from subtle resonance control to creative dynamic shaping.

Practical Applications

Vocals often benefit from mid-side processing: you can add presence to the center channel without altering the stereo balance, keeping the mix wide and cohesive. For low-end, focusing the band in the center tightens bass while leaving side information untouched, which can open up the mix without losing impact.

Space carving between competing instruments becomes straightforward. Use sidechain detection so one band is triggered by another track, automatically ducking a frequency when the dominant source plays, then restoring the original sound afterward. This tool is particularly useful for cleaning up overlapping guitar and vocal ranges, or making room for kick and bass.

Key features

  • Five bands of the Oxford Type-3 EQ curve with proportional-Q response
  • Bands can overlap without static phase distortion or low-frequency artifacts
  • Per-band processing and detection from mono, stereo, mid, or side channels
  • Flexible internal and external sidechain controls
  • Clear GUI that visualizes multiband dynamic workflows
  • Upward and downward compression, as well as upward and downward expansion
  • Onset (transient) detection for precise processing on percussive material

Best for

Best for engineers who need transparent dynamic EQ on vocals, drums, bass, and mix buses, especially when taming resonances without audible pumping. Its mid-side and sidechain features make it ideal for space carving in dense arrangements, giving precise control while preserving the original audio quality.
