Purpose and Core Library

Altiverb 8 XL is designed to make audio sound as if it were performed in a different space. It uses convolution to apply the acoustics of real-world environments to recordings or live audio. The included impulse responses (IRs) were recorded by Audio Ease at locations worldwide, ranging from the Sydney Opera House to a Scottish underground oil tank.

The library spans concert halls, orchestral scoring stages, recording studios, and everyday rooms like bathrooms and trains. It also includes classic reverb gear such as EMT plates, spring reverbs, and vintage digital units like the 480 and RMX 16. The newly designed browser lets you select IRs by clicking photos of rooms, with features like gapless loading and search.

Key Capabilities and Controls

Altiverb 8 offers several shaping tools beyond standard convolution. The Decay control applies an exponential decay to shorten reverb time without altering the room character. Brightness adds high-frequency sparkle to tails that may sound dull. Damping adjusts reverb length across three separate frequency bands, with the effect visible in a waterfall graph.

A four-band equalizer works on the wet signal only, with bass and treble bands using Baxandall curves to minimize phase shift. Size transposes room modes and resonances to make the room feel smaller or larger, while Pre-delay can be set manually or locked to host tempo in note values. These controls allow precise tailoring of the reverb sound.

Workflow and Input Flexibility

For mono or stereo input versions, the Positioner tab allows you to move the virtual speaker within the space, offering realistic playback of audio in the room. This feature is most effective with a fully wet mix, as it includes a direct path from speaker to microphones. Four knobs adjust the direct sound, early reflections, and tail, including gain and color.

The XL version supports more than two inputs, up to 9.1.6 channel configurations. With multiple inputs, the Positioner is replaced by a Cloud Size control. This adjusts how the reverb output clusters around the input pan position, tracking movement of sounds across the soundstage. This is useful for immersive mixing where spatial coherence matters.

Practical Applications and IR Creation

Altiverb is suitable for music production, post-production, and sound design. In music, it can place instruments in a virtual hall or add classic hardware reverb character. For film and video, it adds realistic ambience to dialogue or foley, matching recorded spaces or creating artificial environments. The everyday room IRs are ideal for sound effects.

Altiverb 8 includes sweeps and tools to capture your own impulse responses, letting you create custom acoustics for any space you have access to. The tutorial video provides guidance on best results. This workflow enables users to build a personal library of real-world spaces, expanding the already extensive collection.
