Audio effects and utilities

A bundle containing two MagicDeathEye tube compressor plugins: the mono version for individual tracks and the stereo version with EQ for mastering and bus duties, both modeled after Ian Sefchick’s hardware designs.

DDMF MagicDeathEyeBundle

Purpose

The bundle combines two distinct compressor plugins with a shared musical heritage. The mono plugin is a variable-gain tube compressor, loosely based on a Fairchild 660, designed by mastering engineer Ian Sefchick. It delivers a warm, smooth sound that glues audio together without harsh smashing, making it suitable for individual tracks or a mastering bus.

The stereo plugin is a faithful emulation of a stereo master bus compressor and EQ. It offers a more gentle compression curve and adds an inductor-based EQ section with two boost-only bands and a low cut. Both share the signature MagicDeathEye sound but serve different roles in a mix.

Key Capabilities

The mono plugin’s compression is derived from eight tubes and hand-wound transformers in the hardware, providing a characteristic harmonic distortion. The stereo plugin allows adjusting harmonic distortion from 0 to 100 percent, with 50 percent matching the hardware level. It includes options for 2x or 4x oversampling.

The stereo EQ offers two frequency selections per band and adjustable boost levels (5dB or 3dB split in steps). A two-frequency low cut tightens bass. The HF EQ can be applied to the full stereo field, mid, or side signal, and a low-frequency elliptical filter aids vinyl mastering. Input and output gain can be linked.

Workflow

In a typical mixing session, the mono compressor is inserted on individual instruments or vocals to add warmth and cohesion. Its smooth response prevents over-compression, letting tracks breathe. The stereo compressor is placed on the master bus or submixes for gentle glue and tone shaping via its EQ section.

For mastering, the stereo version’s mid/side EQ allows broad tonal adjustments, while the elliptical filter tames bass on vinyl. The variable distortion lets you dial in subtle or pronounced tube character. Oversampling reduces aliasing when pushed hard.

Practical Applications

Use the mono plugin on drums, vocals, or bass to achieve a classic tube compressor sound that adds polish without losing dynamics. It is ideal for mixing stems or individual channels where a smooth, transparent compression is needed.

The stereo plugin excels on full mixes or stereo buses, especially in mastering. Its EQ and compression work together, with the EQ integrated into the tube gain structure, providing a cohesive, musical result. The mid/side and oversampling features make it versatile for various genres.
