Character modes introduce analog-style saturation with Tube, Diode, and Bright options, plus adjustable Drive and Pre/Post routing. Auto Threshold adapts compression to input level, useful for inconsistent sources like dialog. Upward compression and combined upward/downward processing handle dynamic range in creative ways, while Auto Release adjusts program-dependently for natural response.
Advanced Side-Chain and Triggering
The side-chain EQ includes multi-band filtering with Pro-Q shapes, all-pass filters, and slopes up to 96 dB/oct, including brickwall HP/LP options. This allows precise frequency-dependent compression, such as ducking only specific ranges. Host tempo pulse triggering (with Sync, Offset, and Pulse Length controls) and MIDI triggering offer rhythmic or external control for creative effects.
External side-chain triggering is auditionable, making complex routing easier to set up. Lookahead up to 20 ms, with a global Maximum Lookahead control, manages latency. Range limits gain reduction, and variable knee up to 72 dB soft knee shapes transient response. Hold control adjusts transparency or pumping, and Auto Gain with mid/side awareness maintains perceived level.
Workflow and Interface
The redesigned interface features an animated level display and optional knee display, showing input, output, and gain reduction in real time. A Compact layout hides large displays for a traditional metering view. The preset browser supports search, tagging, metadata, and favorites, and allows copy/paste of settings across instances for faster session setup.
Smart Parameter Interpolation smooths parameter transitions, and sample-accurate automation covers all controls. Undo/redo, A/B comparison, and interactive MIDI Learn are included. The Pro-Q 4 Instance List integration (from Pro-Q 4.10) lets you control Pro-C 3 alongside other FabFilter dynamics in one ecosystem, streamlining plugin management.
